Bill Monti
ConEdison 1967-1998
William (Bill) Monti was born in Manhattan in 1940 and grew up in the Bronx. From 1957-1961 he attended the Maritime College at Ft. Schuyler and majored in Marine Engineering. Upon graduation, he served as a Lieutenant for a steam powered troop ship running between New York and Germany while assigned to work in the engine room. After working at Foster Wheeler and Electric Boat, Bill was hired by ConEdison in 1967 to work at Indian Point Unit 1 as a production engineer and soon obtained an SRO license. During the 1970s, Bill assumed greater management responsibility until becoming the plant superintendent (now know as Site VP) in 1979. In 1984, he was reassigned to work as the plant superintendent for the Waterside plant in Manhattan. Throughout the interview, Bill provides essential technical and operations details about Unit 1, managing a nuclear power plant during the 1980s, and refitting a century old steam plant during the 1990s.
